Last Thursday was my sixteenth birthday, and I went the morning of to get my driver’s license! I’ve only had it for about a week, but driving seems so natural already. (except yesterday- I sprained my ankle at fencing Wednesday night and maintaining consistent speed was rather difficult with such a tender leg)

Today is my last day of school- I’m exempt from all of my exams next week. I’ve been busy with numerous end-of-year things the past couple weeks- choir and theatre banquets, awards ceremony, field trips, and of course the projects and tests my teachers love to throw in at the very end of the year. I had a piano recital on Tuesday- I completely butchered a piece I had played nearly flawlessly at home about an hour before. It wasn’t that miserable for me, though, since my family has heard me play it well and everyone knew I was a beginner.

While I’ve been rather busy after school and thus haven’t had much time for blogging, I have had a lot of downtime in classes that are winding down this week. My satchel is entirely sewn together, though I haven’t added the little ties to the front. I’m not sure when I’ll get around to that!

I really like it, though technically it isn’t finished.

Last night three of my friends and I met at Starbuck’s for the first meeting of our summer writing club. Next year the four of us will be at three different schools, so a school club won’t really work, and we wanted a different atmosphere where we could just write without worrying about time or sponsors or any of the like. It was a great couple of hours, and we plan on meeting again as soon as we can. They even elected me president!

I’ve been crocheting the satchel together, and- though slowly- it is coming along. I’ve got the side pockets on and the front attached to the strap/gusset, and I’ve got about half of the back on.

Last night I went to see Imogen Heap in concert at the Lakewood Theatre. Her opener was Zoe Keating, a celloist. Her music was extremely amazing and also very beautiful. My friend Patrick and I were at the very front, and we could hear people talking during Zoe’s set, which was very rude… but I don’t think it affected my enjoyment. Imogen was great, really personable and fun. She even played something from Details, the CD she released as Frou Frou. I kind of wanted to stay and meet her, but I have a Spanish test and an Algebra 2 quiz at school today, so I figured I shouldn’t stay out any later.

There’s Imogen at the beginning of the show, introducing Zoe. (Zoe had some awesome red dreadlocks!)

Imogen and her "key-tar." She plays all of her music herself!

Here I was in the middle of picking up a billion stitches for the edging on the front. Picking up stitches. Ugh. It resulted in a broken bamboo needle, too. The lovely Crystal Palace people said they’d replace it, though, so all is well.

Yes, indoors, thus bad lighting. But here’s the completed front. Not blocked, of course, since I am a lazy creature and I always think I can get away with not blocking until I’ve sewn the whole mess together and realize that blocking would really help. So everything I do is blocked after sewing.

Completed back. There were even more stitches to pick up!

Inside pocket. Quick little thing.

These are the little i-cords for the ties on the front. It didn’t specify a number of stitches, so I just cast on five and it seemed to work well. Sorry the picture’s so blurry. (Do you like my new bedspread? The old turquoise one had a bright pink ink stain)

The side pockets, all sewn on to the strap. Sewn on wrong, of course, and since taken off and sewn on again, but there’s a view of them anyway.

Did you ever get one of those worksheets in first grade or so, a huge list of directions? The kind where the first says "Read this entire sheet" and the last says "Only do number one" and there’s a bunch of crazy stuff in the middle? I was always the kid that worked about halfway down the sheet before I realized that there had to be a trick, looked back at the last direction, and frantically attempted to erase my entire paper while no one noticed. Yep, that was me. And I do the same thing with my knitting. "Sew pockets on with top 2 inches below pins." Sure, I glanced at the pattern. I saw "pockets" and "pins" and sure enough, I ended up with pockets two inches too high.

Does anyone listen to Cat Stevens? Harold and Maude has been my favorite movie for several years (if you haven’t seen it, go buy it now!) and I love the soundtrack he does for it. I’ve been listening to it nonstop lately.

That’s the last big piece of the satchel. 6′2" long.

So, I took my ACCUPLACER test this morning. The scoring was instant since it was on the computer. I did well. I got an 8/8 on my essay, 114/120 on reading comprehension, 119/120 on sentence skills, 119/120 on elementary algebra, and 110/120 on college level math. Hah. I’m in Algebra 2 at the high school and the math class they placed me into is….. Calculus I. Not trig, not college algebra, not even pre calculus.  I’ll probably take pre-cal anyway, simply because I really haven’t had all those other classes. I sort of taught myself trig this morning though- I read up on it and actually think it soaked into my brain pretty well.

I got the summer IK in the mail yesterday, and I love many of the patterns, as I always do. Interweave is so great!

There’s the back of the Monk’s Travel Satchel. The top bit in seed stitch will make the flap over the front.

I have to take the ACCUPLACER exam for entrance to Richland on Saturday morning. I don’t mind standardized tests, but this one will be on the computer, which I might find annoying.
